 Eating
« Thread Started on May 2, 2008, 9:12am »

So here's the story,

Emily & Nathan always give me a hard time when it come to dinner. Breakfast & lunch are ok but neither of them want to eat dinner. We all end up getting mad or upset (although we try not to). I just don't know how to get them to eat. Even if I feed them foods I know they love, it just doesn't work. I have tried everything I can think of, bribes of good desserts, taking toys away, going to their room (well that one is for Nathan). Nothing seems to help.

Anyone have any suggestions???

My kids all went through that, and I just didn't make them eat. Kids, unlike us, usually won't eat unless they are hungry. I am not sure what time you eat, but maybe if you set dinner for a little later?? When mine didn't eat and got hungry later, I let them eat then. I just heated up what we had for dinner and I got a lot of crap about it, but they eventually got over it and ate at dinner time.

Well Nathan has been doing this for about 1½ years...and he would go to bed without eating most times. We eat at about 5:30 but if we leave it any later then we wouldn't have any time after dinner to do anything...if you know what I mean. In the mornings he will eat a nutrigrain bar for breakfast, then tell me he's hungry about 1½ - 2 hours later so I give him a snack and he will normally eat a good lunch and no snacks in the afternoon but dinner my god, you would think it's a sin to eat! LOL

Isaiah goes through the same thing and I understand your frustrations. I have often wondered what to do myself but his doctor says you can't force him to eat. He will let you know when he's ready so I've been taking my cue from him.

My nephew would only eat bread with butter or peanut butter for the longest time, my sister used to get so upset LOL, but he outgrew it, he is still a picky eater..

Isn't trying to make children eat when they aren't hungry a big factor for obesity later in life?
Perhaps it's because that's how I was raised but in all my babysitting (because I don't have kids), I've found that mom's (Tracy's) method works pretty well.
It is frustrating when you've cooked a nice meal and want to eat together and they just won't, I'm sure... but they'll probably out-grow it. :)

I thought of something a few minutes ago... Have you tried including your children in meal preparation? Maybe if they helped make the meal, they would be more inclined to eat it?

Yeah I have thought of that and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think he's just a strange kid when it comes to meals! LOL
